Spring cleaning
Coxworth reminds residents to wash homes inside-out – but mostly out

Zac Coxworth recently established Coxworth Exterior Cleaning and Pressure Washing in Faribault County – a business which provides exterior cleaning services to the county and to surrounding areas.
If, for a year, you stood outside through rain and shine, through snow and sleet, through the winds of late winter and the muddy days of early spring, it stands to reason you would request to take a shower.
Who is to say our homes would not request the same thing, if only they were as verbally gifted as human beings?
Luckily, they have Zac Coxworth to advocate upon their behalf.
Coxworth, owner of the recently established Coxworth Exterior Cleaning and Pressure Washing, provides exterior cleaning services for Faribault County and the surrounding area.
Apart from soft washing services for homes, Coxworth also lists concrete cleansing and deck powerwashing among the services which Coxworth Exterior Cleaning and Pressure Washing provides local residents.
Coxworth’s exterior cleaning business recently joined the Faribault County business community early this year. However, Coxworth himself is not new to the area of outdoor services.
In fact, most of Coxworth’s professional career has been firmly established in the great outdoors.
Most notably, Coxworth’s second business, Zac’s Lawn Care, provides lawn care services for the Faribault County area.
It was Zac’s Lawn Care, in fact, which inspired Coxworth to expand his services to other outdoor business-related ventures.
The dessert dryness disseminated by last summer’s drought drove Coxworth’s imagination from maintaining the region’s browning vegetation to maintaining some of its manmade fixtures.
“Last year, when it was kind of dry, I decided to add something,” Coxworth recalls.
He says before the conception of Zac’s Lawn Care, he had first considered establishing an exterior cleaning business.
Though he did not act upon the idea at the time, Coxworth decided to dust off his original plans after last year’s dry, brown summer.
“I went back to what I was going to start before,” he reasons. “I don’t see any other companies around here doing it (exterior cleaning).”
Coxworth has general experience in the area of exterior cleaning. In years gone by, he held a position working at a gold mine in Alaska, powerwashing materials.
More recently, he has also tested his exterior cleaning skills and equipment upon area dwellings.
“I did a couple houses last year – I was just testing the waters,” Coxworth says.
Now that he is ramping up his business, however, he admits he sees many houses in the area which could benefit from his services.
He recommends homeowners clean the exterior of their house once a year to avoid a nasty buildup of unwanted exterior debris.
“It’s a lot easier and cheaper,” he explains.
Coxworth says the longer a house is left to accumulate detritus, the more expensive, and difficult, it will be to clean it off.
He notes the buildup is usually easy to spot when it is time to pressure wash. In particular, he advises homeowners to inspect the north side of their house regularly for mold and mildew.
“That’s where it’s more noticeable, is on the north side,” he explains. “It’s usually just green-black.”
When cleaning time comes around, Coxworth begins by soaking down the area of the house which is in need of rinsing.
Afterward, he applies sodium hypochlorite on the affected area.
“That’s what kills all the mold,” Coxworth says.
He uses a pressure washer for the process, down-streaming the chemical off of the pressure washer onto a trailer.
“It can carry 460 gallons of soft water,” Coxworth notes.
He adds he prefers to avoid using hard water on homes, as soft water is a gentler alternative for the siding of a house.
Indeed, Coxworth claims the water which he uses to cleanse homes is comparable to the quality of drinking water.
Coxworth lets the sodium hypochlorite sit on the house for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off.
In simple cases, this could be the end of the process. However, sometimes the process needs to be repeated multiple times if the home in question is severely damaged by mold.
“Some places are completely black,” Coxworth recalls. “You have to keep putting stuff on, and rinsing it off, if the damage is worse.”
The amount of damage, along with the size of the house receiving the scrubbing, both contribute to the time it takes to complete the procedure.
“If it’s a small house that’s not very dirty, it takes just a couple hours,” Coxworth estimates. “A big house could take up to eight hours.”
The cost of the procedure is similarly dependent upon the dwelling’s size and level of damage.
“A small one-story house is $300,” Coxworth says. “Nooks and crannies add to the cost.”
He clarifies the cost often varies, though. He typically prices by the house, after he has inspected its unique qualities and needs.
The homes and yards Coxworth services keep him outdoors as much as can be expected.
However, Coxworth appreciates the many opportunities he is given to enjoy the fresh air.
“What I like best about it? Being outside,” Coxworth concludes.
He also appreciates the people he meets.
“Everybody has a story,” he says.
