A purple-powered celebration of women
Southern Minnesota WoW Expo to take place Sat., Nov. 5
Each year, the Southern Minnesota Women of Worth (WoW) organization hosts its annual WoW Expo to assert the worth of all women and to raise funds to support southern Minnesota women who are survivors of domestic abuse.
This year, the purple-powered event will take place at the Golden Bubble, near Wells, on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the WoW Expo is free, although donations are always appreciated.
Southern Minnesota WoW views the Expo as a yearly opportunity to remind women of their indisputable value.
As WoW’s mantra states, “I am a woman of worth. Southern Minnesota Women of Worth shall be for the good and betterment of families of rural southern Minnesota, through continued education about abuse, neglect and violence that takes place in the rural area, along with financial support of programs designed to help all victims of abuse.”
The WoW Expo exemplifies the goals set forth by the mantra.
“It’s our fundraiser to raise money to help victims of domestic abuse,” Kristin Woodwick, vice president of the Southern Minnesota WoW organization, summarizes. “It’s the only fundraiser we do.”
At this year’s WoW Expo, many activities will take place to celebrate and support southern Minnesota women.
When attendees walk through the Golden Bubble’s doors on Nov. 5, they will be handed a postcard which, when filled out, will automatically enter their name in a drawing for door prizes which will be awarded throughout the day.
Promptly at 9 a.m., attendees can start browsing a wide array of vendor booths which represent “a little bit of everything,” according to Woodwick.
She shares that as of last week, 33 vendors had signed up to sell their wares at the Expo. Just a few of the expected vendors include Blue Earth’s CCFBank, Color Street Nails, a tea vendor, a kringla vendor, as well as vendors peddling handmade crafts, clothes, makeup and wine. Some vendors hail locally, while others will travel from as far away as northern Iowa.
Anyone who works up an appetite while shopping will be well-fed. Coffee and breakfast will be provided, and lunch will be catered by the P-Pod.
Those craving something stronger than coffee can also visit the event’s full bar, which will offer attendees a surprise signature drink in honor of the day.
The WoW Expo’s annual makeover reveal, sponsored by Dikken’s Decorating, Inc. and Edward Jones financial advisor Chase Brandt, will take place at 11:30 a.m.
Three women have been selected for the honor this year, with the selection process following a slightly different format. While makeover recipients have traditionally been nominated by friends and family, this year those who were interested in receiving a makeover submitted their own name to a random drawing.
Blue Earth residents Missy Felion and Rachel Kienitz were selected as this year’s makeover recipients through the new process. However, a third makeover recipient, Michelle Sauck, of Walters, was also nominated by Sara Obermeyer.
Felion, Kienitz and Sauck will reveal a new head-to-toe look on Nov. 5 with an entirely new outfit, compliments of Dikken’s Decorating, Inc., and a hair and makeup styling session at Fairmont’s Lakeside Salon.
The festivities will continue when this year’s keynote speaker, Cindra Kamphoff, takes the microphone at 1 p.m.
“She is a mental performance coach and consultant,” Woodwick explains.
Kamphoff has worked with many professional athletes and teams, including the Minnesota Vikings and the United States Olympic Track and Field Team, using a proven, results-focused 10-step methodology to help them achieve high performance standards and lofty goals. Kamphoff is also an experienced motivational speaker.
Speaking of worthwhile goals, Woodwick shares that so far this year, Southern Minnesota WoW has donated $4,874 in funds to southern Minnesota women survivors.
She hopes many will attend the WoW Expo to help WoW continue its do-gooding.
“It’s just a fun day. It’s made to be a fun, uplifting day,” Woodwick says. “Come find out what Women of Worth is all about. We are always looking for people to serve on our committee.”
