Elite 8 Benefit set for March 25

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Mar 20, 2023

Jon Trasamar, a 2009 BEA graduate, shown here in action during his high school sports career.

The Blue Earth Area basketball boosters will host their Eighth Annual Fundraiser/Alumni Game on Saturday, March 25. The game will begin at 1 p.m. and will be followed by viewing part of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at Average Jo’s from 4:45-10:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the day will be given to BEA basketball alumnus Jon Trasamar, to help in his fight against cancer.

“I came to BEA when Jon was a junior,” BEA boy’s basketball coach Colby Swanson said. “He impressed me as a wonderful leader and his peers gravitated to him.”

Swanson explained it was some of Trasamar’s former schoolmates who came up with the idea to have the benefit for Jon.

“They told me Jon is the kind of guy who will do anything for his friends,” Swanson said. “They said they wanted to do something for Jon and let him know how much people are behind him.”

As for the game itself, there will be some changes to the format this year.

“We are doing things a little different this time around,” Swanson explained. “We are going to try and make the teams more competitive by putting the rosters together that day and getting a better mix of players.”

People who wish to play in the alumni game may preregister on the BEA boys basketball Facebook page or they can just show up that day.

The viewing party at Average Jo’s has a cost of $30 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. The price includes dinner and one drink ticket.
