New Sober Home for veterans proposed for farm site by Wells

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Apr 16, 2023

Although it was not originally on the agenda for Monday night’s Wells City Council meeting and no action was needed by the council, the council members took time to hear from Tim Murray, executive director with Trinity Sober Homes, about a proposed project to bring a Trinity Sober Home to a rural site southwest of Wells.

“Most people are aware of the problems many of our veterans face with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and suicide. A recent Veteran’s Administration study showed that 75-95 percent of veterans with PTSD abused drugs and alcohol,” Murray said. “We believe lack of sobriety is a key root cause of veteran suicide.”

Murray then went on to explain his group is working to raise $1.025 million to design, purchase, clean-up, remodel, and restore a hydroponic farm operation which will be used as a residential sober home exclusively for veterans in Wells.

“The home will be unique in the state of Minnesota, combining Trinity’s proven sober housing components of quality living, spiritual coaching, private rooms, and a culture of brotherhood with the special needs of our veterans,” Murray explained. “We can offer mental health counseling, immediate employment, animal (dog) therapy and transportation.”
