This photo, released by the U.S. Attorney’s office, is said to be of Paul Orta Jr., of Blue Earth, removing a barricade in front of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021
A Blue Earth man was arrested last week and charged with crimes having to do with the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.
Paul Orta Jr., 34, of Blue Earth, was charged on Wednesday of last week with a felony count of obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder and various misdemeanor counts including entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds and disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds.
Video taken at the Capitol building that day allegedly shows Orta moving barricades and other activities such as approaching police officers, throwing an object at the police line and pushing through a police line.
Orta is said to have gone to the FBI office in Brooklyn Center on Jan. 25, 2021, just over two weeks after the incident at the Capitol, because he had seen his name and photo on the FBI website. It was reported in various publications that he did so because he said he wanted to “do the right thing.”
However, it was not until last Tuesday that he was arrested by the Blue Earth Police Department and booked into the Faribault County Jail. The FBI transported him from there to the Twin Cities the next day, Wednesday, where he appeared in federal court.
“Officer Tharen Haugh stopped Orta on Tuesday for a traffic violation – he had a headlight out,” Police Chief Tom Fletcher said. “He ran his plates and found out there was a federal warrant out for his arrest.”
Fletcher said he knew about the federal warrant and he also knew the FBI was going to come on Wednesday and arrest Orta.
“We inadvertently saved them the trouble of making the arrest,” Fletcher said. “They did not have to find him, just pick him up at the county jail.”
Fletcher said Orta has lived in Blue Earth for approximately the past six years, having moved here from Texas. He was reported to have been living in the apartments on Bartel Drive.
Local law enforcement officials said they had not had any incidences with Orta in the past. A check of court records show a couple of misdemeaner traffic tickets were issued in years past.
Orta is the 13th person from Minnesota to have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. Five of them have been convicted. Cases against the others are pending.
Across the country there have been 1,202 defendents who have been charged, according to information from the U.S. Justice Department that has been reported in various publications.
