BE Council rectifies error in levy resolution
The Blue Earth City Council quite literally held a one-minute meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at noon.
City administrator Mary Kennedy called the special meeting at the end of last week to rectify a typographical error in Resolution 23-42. The council had passed the resolution at its regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 18.
Resolution 23-42, which set the 2023 property tax levy collectible in 2024, had designated $976,000 to Blue Earth’s general/operating levy.
However, on Dec. 27, mayor Rick Scholtes explained that the number was a typographical error.
“It is supposed to be $967,000, which is a $9,000 difference,” he said.
Resolution 23-43 was put before the council on Dec. 27, which stated that due to the obvious typographical error in Resolution 23-42, that resolution would be revoked.
Council member Ann Hanna’s motion to approve Resolution 23-43, thereby revoking Resolution 23-42, passed unanimously.
The council then reviewed Resolution 23-44, which is an updated resolution setting the payable 2023 property tax levy collectible in 2024.
Resolution 23-44 designates $967,000 to the general/operating levy. The amount designated to the debt levy – $1 million – remains the same, as does the levy’s total of $1,967,000.
The 2023 levy will still represent a 5.2 percent increase over the 2022 levy, as was stated at the previous meeting on Dec. 18.
Council member Jacque Drew’s motion to approve Resolution 23-44 passed on a unanimous vote.
Apart from correcting the general/operating levy total, Resolution 23-44 also instructs the Blue Earth city clerk to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to the Faribault County auditor.
The Blue Earth City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 5 p.m.
