Incident in Wells delays school
At 3:29 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, May 29, the Wells Police Department received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived on the scene, the subject was not located, according to a press release issued by the police.
With the subject known to be a juvenile, the United South Central School District made the decision to start school two hours late.
“We were monitoring an ongoing situation involving the Wells Police Department this morning that was not directly connected to USC Schools. Out of an abundance of caution, we delayed the start of our school day to be certain there was no safety risk to our students as they came into our building today,” USC superintendent Taylor Topinka said. “The safety of our students is our first priority and we greatly appreciate our USC families for adjusting their morning schedules as we exercised caution during the circumstance.”
The press release from the Wells Police Department further stated that there was never any danger or threats made towards the school or students. The public was not in danger as the suspect was known to the victim.
“This was an isolated event,” Wells Police officer Tiffany Cumming said. “The juvenile subject was located at 8:12 a.m. and placed under arrest. Just to be clear, there was no discharge of a firearm.”
Later that same morning, the juvenile subject was charged with second degree assault with a dangerous weapon, fifth degree assault, disorderly conduct and possession of a firearm without a permit.
The Wells Police Department was assisted by the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
