Several Faribault County Sheriff’s Department vehicles were damaged and a Bricelyn man is now facing multiple charges after he led law enforcement on a chase that covered many miles.
The incident happened on Wednesday, Sept. 4, starting at 9:53 p.m. in rural Bricelyn, at the intersection of 530th Avenue and 30th Street, according to a report from the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office.
A Faribault County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2006 tan Chevrolet Impala for an equipment violation. The vehicle was being driven by Challen Alfredo Bena Hernandez, 24, of Bricelyn.
Bena Hernandez ignored the officer’s lights and siren and fled south to Winnebago County, Iowa, with deputies in pursuit. The pursuit re-entered Minnesota along Highway 22 and Bena Hernandez rammed into a sheriff’s squad pickup twice, disabling it.
The pursuit continued into the city of Kiester and around the streets and alleys for four miles in the city, before leaving the town on 35th Street.
Bena Hernandez lost control of the vehicle, which struck another Faribault County Sheriff’s squad pickup and went into the north ditch.
A third sheriff’s squad pickup made contact with the Bena Hernandez’s vehicle to prevent it from fleeing.
Bena Hernandez was arrested and transported to the Faribault County Jail where he is facing charges including felony DWI, felony fleeing a peace officer in a vehicle, felony first degree damage to public property, gross misdemeanor driving after cancellation, felony first degree assault – attempted deadly force on a peace officer and felony second degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
The highest speeds during the pursuit were 80 miles per hour. No one suffered any injuries during the pursuit.
The Faribault County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wells Police Department. The incident is under investigation by the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office with assistance by the Minnesota State Patrol.
