A referendum question on ballots for residents of the Blue Earth Area School District failed to pass, and there was an upset in the race for the three BEA School Board open seats.

The ballot question had to do with building a new K-6 school building near the current high school building.

It failed with 2,605 no votes to 1,655 yes votes, or a 61.15 percent to 38.85 percent margin.

In the race for BEA School Board positions, incumbent Ted Armon was the top vote getter with 2,317 votes (24.72 percent), incumbent Lindsay Mensing was second with 2,215 votes (23.63 percent) and challenger Gary Armon was third 2,162 votes (23.06 percent).

Those three were elected to the board. Incumbent Jeffrey L. Eckles was not far behind with 1,972 votes (21.04 percent).

There also were 708 write-in votes, or 7.55 percent. No names are released but there was one declared write-in candidate running.

At the United South Central School District, there were only the three incumbents running and all three were re-elected.

Brad Heggen was the top vote getter with 2,428 votes (35.02 percent). Second place was Christopher Lutteke with 2,229 votes (32.15 percent). Right behind was Michael Schrader with 2,224 votes (32.07 percent).

There were 53 write-in votes, or .76 percent.
