Two out of three hog barns near Walters were destroyed by a fire on Saturday, Jan. 25. Firefighters were able to save one of the barns, which were connected by a common hallway.

A large barn fire near Walters on Saturday, Jan. 25, brought out eight fire departments and a couple dozen fire trucks.

The fire call came in at 1:46 p.m. It was located at a farm at 57921 100th Street, at the intersection with State Highway 22, south of Interstate 90.

The barn was actually three hog barns tied together with a common hallway, according to Stacy Krohnberg of the Walters Fire Department.

“The two to the north were lost, but we did manage to cut off the fire before it got to the third one,” Krohnberg said.

He added that some cows were already outside one barn and pigs were inside another barn, but he believed no livestock was lost in the fire.

The State Fire Marshall’s office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

The seven other fire departments that responded, besides the Walters Fire Department, were the Wells Fire Department, Kiester Fire Department, Bricelyn Fire Department, Frost Fire Department, Easton Fire Department, Minnesota Lake Fire Department and the Alden Fire Department.

Firefighters stayed on the scene for nearly seven hours, until sometime after 8 p.m.
