Merwin E. Thompson, 88

East Chain — Services for Merwin E. Thompson, 88, of East Chain, were held Aug. 11, 2008 at United Methodist Church in East Chain with Rev. Calvin Daniels officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222.

Merwin passed away Aug. 7, 2008 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont was in charge of arrangements.

Merwin Edwin Thompson was born on April 8, 1920 in Pleasant Prairie Township, Martin County, the son of Cecil and Clara (Stock) Thompson. He attended Martin County country schools. On June 6, 1941 he married Helen Zoeller. Merwin volunteered for the U.S. Army, joining on Jan. 27, 1942. Serving in Europe he was in five campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1945. Merwin loved farming.

He is survived by one son, Roger (Donna) Thompson of East Chain; one daughter, Marilyn (Wallace) Christ of Lakota, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tony Thompson of East Chain, Kristin Christ of Eureka Springs, Alaska, Tara (Justin) Thompson-Thedens of Fairmont, Kathleen Christ of Minneapolis, Todd (Malorie) Thompson of East Chain, Karen Christ of Lakota; three great grandchildren, Oliver and Nola Thompson-Thedens and Elsa Thompson; brother, Charles (Kathryn) Thompson of Fairmont; sister-in-law, Eunice (Louis) Bulfer of Fairmont; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 62 years, Helen Thompson in 2003.
