Sophia E. Brandsoy Yost, 89

Blue Earth — Sophia E. Brandsoy Yost, age 89, died March 13, 2009, at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services were held March 21, 2009, at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church, rural Bricelyn. Rev. Patricia Hinkie and Rev. Ed Nieman officiated. Burial was in North Blue Earth Lutheran Church Cemetery. Patton Funeral Home and Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.

Sophia E. Brandsoy Yost was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Ogilvie to Henry and Emma (Sternke) Mohr. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Ogilvie. She attended country school in Ogilvie. Her family moved to the Bricelyn area in 1932 where she was confirmed at Bricelyn Lutheran Church.

She was married to Alvin J. Brandsoy in 1939 and the couple farmed in the Frost and Bricelyn area for many years. They had eight children, JoAnn (Eldo) Ovrebo of Wells, Shirley (Gene) Anderson of Bricelyn, Helen Brandsoy, Earl (Barbara) Brandsoy of Mesa, Ariz., Mary (Russ) Erichsrud of Blue Earth, Dale (Portia) Brandsoy of Blue Earth, Judith (Gary) Underdahl of Elmore and Carol (James) Schroeder of Alden. Also surviving are, grandchildren: Cynthia Ovrebo, Jeffrey Ovrebo, Darren Anderson, Christine Kuehl, Daniel Anderson, Amy Brandsoy, John Brandsoy, Sarah Brandsoy, Chad Erichsrud, Stephanie Erichsrud, Krista Picha, Mara Brandsoy, Anna Rosenberger, Michael Brandsoy, Aaron Gerber, 16 great-grandchildren, sisters, Alva (Wilbur) Malwitz, Evelyn Malwitz, Emma Mittlestadt, sister-in-law, Gertrude Mohr and brother-in-law, Harold Brandsoy.

Following Alvin’s death in February 1965, she was later married to Arthur G. Yost in 1969. The couple farmed for several years in the Walters area before retiring in the mid 1980’s. Art died in June 1987. Sophia is also survived by her step-daughter, Beverly (Odean) Ranes, and step-grandchildren, Jody Wegner, Stacy Enser, Todd Ranes, Timothy Ranes, Tammy Bauman and 11 step great-grandchildren.

She was recently a resident of St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan for many years and especially enjoyed having her children nearby and frequent family visits.

Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a five year old daughter, Helen, her step-daughter, Phyllis Enser, four brothers: Robert, Clarence, Rudolph and Henry Jr. Mohr, two sisters, Esther Biesterfield, Freda Rosnow, four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
