Jerome W. Halvorson, 86

Dec 20, 2010

Rake, Iowa – Jerome Willard Halvorson, age 86, formerly of Rake, Iowa, died Dec. 10, 2010, at Timely Mission Nursing Home, in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Memorial Service was held Dec. 17, 2010, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Rake. The Rev. Terry Mahnke officiated and burial was in West Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Rake. Military honors were accorded by the Rake American Legion. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Bricelyn assisted with arrangements.

He was born May 6, 1924, to Carl and Anna (Quam) Halvorson on the family farm west of Rake. He attended country school and was baptized and confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church, in Rake.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was stationed until the war ended in 1945 in the South Pacific. He served on a sea-going tug in the Russell and Solomon Islands.

Upon returning home after the war he engaged in farming with his brother Orin for several years while starting up his own excavating business: Halvorson Jeep Trenching & Back Hoe Service, which he operated until retiring in 2001.

Jerome and Lois Y. Heath were married at Zion Lutheran Church on Nov. 27, 1955. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Rake.

He served on the Rake volunteer Fire Department, including as chief, for over 30 years. He also served on the Rake City Council and as Mayor for several terms. He was a deacon at Zion Lutheran Church, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, was a member of the Rake Commercial Club, and helped for many years with the community lutefisk suppers.

Jerome loved his family; enjoyed his work, meeting people, his ‘coffee group’, hearing a good story, the chance to travel and explore new places, fishing vacations and helping others. He was proud to be included in the 2009 Winnebago County Honor Flight to view the World War II Veterans Memorial. He was a good cook and his klub and lutefisk will be missed. He said he felt he was the luckiest man alive that Lois said yes when he asked her to marry him and they could spend so much of their lives together.

He is survived by his children, Joel, of Rake, and Linda Bosma, of Minneapolis, Anne (Carl) Berberich, of Rochester, Paul (Dana Rogers), of Buffalo Center, and Matthew, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Christina Berberich, of Chicago, Stephen (Kate) Rogers, of Manly, Iowa, Ryan and Kenneth Halvorson, of Buffalo Center; one sister, Arlet (John) Rokke, of Belmond, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Nella Halvorson, of Blue Earth, and Sharon (Don) Erickson, of Fairmont.
