Marion A. Muir

Winnebago – Marion Austin Muir, age 100, of Winnebago, died Dec. 20, 2010, at Parker Oaks Communities, Winnebago.

Memorial Services are being held today, Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Winnebago, with Rev. Michael Roys officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Spencer-Owen Funeral Home, in Winnebago, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

She was born Oct. 9, 1910, the first child of Harry S. and Florence (Austin) Muir. She grew up on the family farm with her three sisters, and attended elementary and high school in Winnebago, graduating in 1928. Marion attended the University of Minnesota and in 1934 graduated with a degree in home economics education and went on to earn a graduate degree in social work. Her first job was with the Hennepin County Welfare Board. These were depression years when families needs were great and funding was short. She put her heart into helping her clients.

In 1954, she moved into her second job, managing employee services for Northern States Power in Minneapolis as an industrial social worker.

In 1975, Marion retired and came back to Winnebago and the family farm. She filled her retirement years with volunteer work, gardening and enjoying her friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, roundtable study club, and Winnebago garden club, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Winnebago Area Museum. In the year 2000, the Mitchell Chautauqua Circle honored Marion by naming her Woman of Achievement. This honor meant a great deal to her.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Helen Waller.

She is survived by two sisters, Florence Garletz and Ruth Hartman; and nieces and nephews.
