Northrop – Funeral Services for Carl H. Luhmann, age 85, of Northrop, were held Feb. 9, 2011, at the St.?James Lutheran Church, in Northrop. Burial followed the service in the St. James Lutheran Cemetery, in Northrop, with full military graveside honors by the Schwieger-Kahler American Legion Post #522, of Northrop, and the Martin County VFW Post #1222, of Fairmont.

Carl passed away Feb. 5, 2011, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center, in Fairmont.

The Lakeview Funeral Home, of Fairmont, assisted the family with the arrangements.

Carl Henry Luhmann was born Jan. 17, 1926, on the family farm in Rutland Township, the son of Albert and Ella (Kaeding) Luhmann. He received his education at the St. James Lutheran Parochial School, in Northrop. On July 10, 1945, Carl enlisted with the United States Navy as a Seebees. During his enlistment, Carl retained the rank of Seaman 1st Class and served his country in Guam and the surrounding islands. After his honorable discharge on Aug. 19, 1946, Carl returned home to Northrop.

On Sept. 5, 1948, Carl was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Decker. To this union six children were born, Carl P., Stevan, Gary, Gwen, Sharon and Patti. Together the couple made their home in Northrop until 1950, when they moved to Pennock. In 1952, the family returned to the family farm near Granada where they lived until 1980 when they moved into Northrop. In 2003, the couple moved to Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont, and later Carl resided at the Lakeview and Phyllis is at Maplewood.

Carl was a hard working man, in his younger years, he worked as a butter maker in Northrop and following his move to Pennock, he worked for the Pennock Creamery. Upon their return to the family farm, Carl farmed the family farm for many years and also worked for the MN Motor Bus Company. He retired in 1996.

In his spare time, Carl enjoyed fishing and hunting deer and pheasants. His love of the outdoors was evident in the joy he found farming. Carl treasured memories made snowmobiling in the winter and spending time with his family and friends. Carl was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, in Northrop, where he was a Sunday School Teacher and also sang in the Men’s Choir. He also served as sexton of the St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery for over 20 years. Carl was a life member and Past Commander of the Schwieger-Kahler American Legion Post #522 and was also a life member of the Fairmont VFW Post #1222.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Phyllis Luhmann, of Fairmont; sons, Carl P. Luhmann, of Fairmont, Stevan Luhmann, of Sherburn, and Gary (Sandra) Luhmann, of Granada; daughters, Gwen (Clyde) Hewett, of Delavan, Sharon Edinger, of Plymouth, and Patti (Michael) Salic, of Winnebago; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence (Winnefred) Luhmann; one sister, Arleen (Virgil) Heidenreich; three sisters-in-law, Fern Luhmann, Donna Decker and Marvel Overby; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ella Luhmann; one sister, Bernice Widman; two brothers, Alvin Luhmann and Kenneth Luhmann; one granddaughter, Whitney Luhmann; three brothers-in-law; one niece; aunts and uncles.
