L. Marie Wood, 95
Fairmont – A Celebration of Life Service for L. Marie Wood, age 95, of Fairmont and Granada, was held Feb. 10, 2011, at the United Methodist Church, in Fairmont. The Rev. Tony Fink officiated. Burial followed in Center Creek Cemetery, near Granada.
Marie passed away Feb. 6, 2011, at the Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center, in Fairmont.
L. Marie (Warriner) Wood was born on May 31, 1915, in Silver Lake Township, Martin County, the daughter of Howard and Clara (Brown) Warriner. She attended District 5 country school and then graduated from the Fairmont High School in 1932. In 1934, she moved with her family to a farm near Granada. She was united in marriage to Lowell Wood on April 4, 1939, and they farmed and raised a family in Center Creek Township. Lowell passed away in February of 1989, and Marie continued to live on the farm until her health declined and she moved to the Maplewood Residence in Fairmont.
She was a 4-H member then leader for many years. She was active in the Granada School PTA and was the District PTA president. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge for over 50 years and was a local delegate to the Republican Party. She organized the Center Creek Community Chest and was the president until it disbanded, lifetime member of the Fairmont Hospital Auxiliary and the Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center Auxiliary. She served as president for the Center Creek Community Chest and as secretary of the following organizations, Granada Twigs, Martin County Public Health Nursing Service and the Blue Earth Senior Citizens Group.
Marie was a member of the Granada United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and was past president for many years. She represented the Granada United Methodist Church in Church Women United. After the Granada United Methodist Church closed in 2000, she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church in Fairmont.
She loved gardening, flowers and feeding the birds. She furnished flowers for church services at the United Methodist Church in Granada for many years.
Those that will cherish her memory include two daughters, Kathleen Mathiason, of Granada, and Pamela (Gary) Hill, of Winnebago; four grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) Mathiason, of Granada, Dan (Kris) Mathiason, of Blaine, Kent (Sara) Roper, of Roseville, and Lori (Scott) Foster, of Winnebago; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Collin, Riley, Jacob, Miranda, Madeline, Derek and Ryan; one sister, Lavonne Kahler, of Baxter; one brother, Lawrence (Arlene) Warriner, of Granada; sisters-in-law, Geneva Wood, of Granada, and Lorraine Wood, of Riverview, Fla.; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Marie was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Gary Mathiason; sister, Mildred Bloome; and two brothers, Ralph and Eldon “Jerry” Warriner.
