Peter A. Sonnek, 91
Inver Grove Heights – Peter Albert Sonnek, age 91, formerly of Wells, died Feb. 13, 2011, at his home in Inver Grove Heights.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 17, 2011, at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, in Wells. The Rev. Mark McNea officiated, and burial was in St. Casimir’s Cemetery, Wells. Military Honors were accorded by the Wells Color Guard.
Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home, in Wells, was in charge of arrangements.
Peter was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Minnesota Lake Township, the son of Frank and Caroline (Osdoba) Sonnek. He entered into the Army on Jan. 21, 1942, and was honorably discharged Dec. 9, 1945. On Sept. 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Jean Ann Staloch. He worked for Walter F. Stenzel Construction for over 30 years until retiring in 1982. During his retirement he was groundskeeper for the Wells Golf Course and he enjoyed farming. Peter took pleasure in cooking, baking, gardening, and was well known for his homemade Christmas candy. He was active in the VFW, serving two terms as Post Commander, and was influential in remodeling the VFW from 1984-1987. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Throughout the years, Peter was known for his lively sense of humor, his precarious skill at cards, and a good ‘ol scoop of beer at the VFW.
Peter is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Terry) Swim, of Des Moines, Iowa, her sons, Jeremy, Jeff (Angel) and Jared; daughter, Denise (Gary) Maras, of Arlington, Texas, children, Jill (Duane), Jami, Lindsey and Sara; daughter, Roxanne Sonnek, of Inver Grove Heights, children, Colleen and Matthew; daughter, Debra (Joe) Evan, of Rochester, children Angie (Chris), Chrissy (Mike), Vicki (Becky) and Candi; son, John (Kelly) Sonnek, of Wells, children, Nicole and Jake; son, Richard (Lynne) Sonnek, of Woodbury, children, Andra and Jenna; son, Michael (Lynda) Sonnek, of Edina, children, Rebecca, Christopher, Pamela and Rachael; great-grandson, Tyler Jones; and sister, Ann Fischer. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Adeline (Gerry) James, Margie Sonnek and Marlene Staloch; brother-in-law, Matthew “Pat” Neubauer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Ann, in 2009; his parents; son, Ronald; granddaughter, Jaclyn; brothers, Dominic, Herbert, Mathew, Eugene, Robert, Francis, Norbert, Albert and David Sonnek; sisters, Maagdalena Volz, Helen Yociel, Martha Bach, Dorothy Neubauer, and two siblings in infancy.
