Fairmont — Services for Eldo J. Fosness, age 85, of Fairmont, were held April 13, 2011, at the Lakeview Funeral Home, in Fairmont, with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County VFW Post #1222 after the service at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held at a later date.

Eldo passed away on Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2011, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center, in Fairmont.

The Lakeview Funeral Home, of Fairmont, assisted the family with the arrangements.

Eldo Jerome Fosness was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Frost to Lily Fosness. He grew up farming on the family farm in Eden Township, Winnebago County, near Rake, Iowa, with his mother and grandparents, Lars and Carrie Fosness. Eldo graduated eighth grade at the Eden #1 Country School and attended Kiester High School.

Eldo entered the U.S. Army in November 1944. He served during WWII in the 6th and 8th Infantry in France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany. Eldo obtained the rank of Tech Sergeant and was honorably discharged in August 1946.

On?Dec. 10, 1948, Eldo was united in marriage to Shirly Ann Currie at the Methodist Church, in Blue Earth. They were blessed with three children; Ed, Steve and Sharon. He worked various jobs in Blue Earth and Fairmont which included union paint contractor, railroad worker, union building construction on old Fairmont High School and Sherburn High School, road construction on Highway 16 from Albert Lea to Sioux Falls, 3M, Fairmont Canning Company and caretaker of Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Eldo and Shirly started Fosness Monuments and Cemetery Work in July 1960 and continued the family business until retiring. The business is in its third generation of ownership.

Eldo was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader, 4-H Leader in Fraser Township and Life Member of the VFW Post #1222 and American Legion Post #36 where he was past County Commander. Eldo was an avid hunter and fisherman traveling to several states to pursue his quarry. His greatest disappointment was out-living all of his hunting and fishing buddies.

In August 2007, Eldo entered Lakeview Health Care Center after back surgery incapacitated his walking ability. Back surgery was the first time he entered a hospital in his life time.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 62 years, Shirly Fosness, of Fairmont; sons, Edward (Judy) Fosness, of Bertha, and Steven (Kathy) Fosness, of Fairmont; grandchildren, Kristina (James) Deppa, Elizabeth (Fidelis) Akono, Karina Schmitz, John Fosness, Andrea (Josh) Laven, Susanna (Benjamin) Feiro, Steven (Simbre) Fosness, Eldo Luke (Danielle) Fosness, and Ginny Fosness; 16 great-grandchildren, Faith, Dan, Zach, Micah and Dante Deppa, Noah and Kyra Schmitz, Lilly, Hudson and Sawyer Laven, Alida Feiro, Ava, Olivia and Will Fosness, Emanuel Fosness, and Sullivan Fosness; brothers, Carroll (Lena) Bresee, of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Bernie (Gwen) Bresee, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; sister, Lois Bresee, of Oskaloosa; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Eldo was preceded in death by his parents, Lily and Bige Bresee; infant son; daughter, Sharon Fosness; grandson, Jacob Fosness; and many dear friends.
