Genevieve G. Kershaw, 91
Braddock Heights, Md. – Genevieve Fern Etta Gust Kershaw, age 91, died Oct. 2, 2011, at Vindobona Nursing in Braddock Heights, Md. She was a former resident of Farnham, Va. Genevieve was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Faribault County. She was the daughter of Ohmer Gust and Marguerite Etta Boettcher Gust. Marguerite died shortly after Genevieve’s birth and the infant was reared by her paternal grandparents, John and Lydia Gust, of Guckeen.
She attended Macalester College in St. Paul. She earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota and moved to Duluth to begin a career in public health. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps near the end of World War II and served as a flight nurse, attending injured soldiers as they returned from Europe and the Pacific.
Following the war, Genevieve continued her nursing career in Colorado, Utah, and Washington D.C. Genevieve enjoyed reading, cooking, recipe collecting, gardening and the arts.
Genevieve leaves to celebrate her life her companion and loyal friend, Gloria Dickerson, of Richmond, Va., as well as two sisters, Joyce Ehrich, of Blue Earth, and Jean Johnson, of Montezuma, Iowa; two sons, Stephen Kershaw, of California, and William Kershaw, of Garland,?Texas; three daughters, Larkann Hollister, of Renton, Wash., Lucinda deCapiteau, of Silver City, N.M., and Rebecca Gill, of Middletown, Md.; a granddaughter, Jessica Wenderoth, of Littlestown, Pa.; and three great-granddaughters, Sierra, Savanna and Abigail. Genevieve’s daughters express singular gratitude to Robert Gill, husband of Rebecca Gill, for his gentle and compassionate attention to Genevieve during the last weeks of her life.
Genevieve was preceded in death by a sister, Mavis Boettcher, of Blue Earth; two daughters, Susan Lydia McKinney and Margaret Edith Emerick; one son, John William Kershaw; and her husbands, Dick A. McKinney, of Tonawanda, Kansas, and Douglas H. Kershaw, of Ogden, Utah.
Genevieve willed her remains to science. A Memorial Service will be held in Blue Earth at a future date.
