Duane G. Garmann, 78

Owatonna Duane G. Garmann, age 78, of Owatonna, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Homestead Hospice House.

He was born Sept. 14, 1933, in Elmore, the son of George and June (Collison) Garmann.

He had suffered from Parkinson’s since 2004. He graduated from Elmore High School, and then worked for Green Giant Company in Blue Earth. He then poured concrete, was a stone mason, cut trees and many various jobs until he became a policeman in 1964 in Owatonna. He married Marlene Hesseldahl on Nov. 21, 1953, in Elmore. Together they had two sons, Steven and Tom. He was very proud of his sons and was a very caring husband and father. He was a man of his word and friends were very important to him. He retired in 1997 after thirty-three years on the police force. He started as a patrolman and ended as a detective. He really liked his job, and always said that the city and the people were good to him. He finally got the building he wanted where he was able to work with his hands to restore trucks, tractors, etc., as this was his hobby.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Garmann, of Owatonna; two sons, Steven Garmann and Tom Garmann, both of Owatonna; grandchildren, Courtney Garmann, Casey (Mark) Attig, and Travis Hanson; and great-grandchildren, Ava and Presley Attig.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Roger.

Visitation was on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Funeral Services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Michaelson Funeral Home, in Owatonna. The Rev. Loren Olsen officiated. Interment was in Riverview Cemetery, in Elmore.
