Lydia H. Holland, 102
Winona Funeral Services for Lydia H. Holland, age 102, of Winona, and formerly of Fairmont, were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont at 1 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2012. Burial followed the service in the Riverview Cemetery near Elmore. Visitation was held prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. A luncheon was served during the visitation prior to the service for family and friends to share their memories. Lydia passed away peacefully on Saturday,?Sept. 29, 2012, at the Sauer Health Care Center in Winona. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont assisted the family with arrangements.
Lydia H. (Simon) Holland, the daughter of Julius and Clara (Fortman) Simon, was born Feb. 8, 1910, in Fairmont. She attended school in Fairmont and graduated from high school in 1928.
On Sept. 10, 1939, Lydia was married to Joseph Holland in Fairmont. He preceded her in death in Nov. 1980. Lydia and Joseph lived on and farmed the Holland home farm near Elmore where they raised two daughters, Jane and Signe. In 1976, they retired and moved to their beloved home on George Lake in Fairmont where Lydia lied until 2006. At that time, she moved to her apartment in Goldfinch Assisted Living. Lydia was active in Salem Lutheran Church in Pilot Grove and later in Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, as well as various community organizations. In March of 2012, Lydia moved to Sauer Health Care Center in Winona.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jane (Philip) Gjevre, of Stevens Point, Wis., and Signe (Dr. Roger) Cone, of Winona; eight grandchildren, Mark (Jane) Gjevre, of Wayzata, Bryan Gjevre, of Baldwin, Wis., Joel (Katianne) Gjevre, of Plymouth, Theodore (Lynette) Cone, of Onalaska, Wis., Lisel Cone, of Mounds View, Sara Cone, of West Bend, Wis., Rachel (Jeffrey) Miller, of Farmington, and Katherine (Daryl) Schulz, of Rochester; 10 great-grandchildren, Tobias and Maxwell Gjevre, Haley, Gracie and Joseph Cone, Tyler and Caraline Miller, and Davis, Lauren and Meredith Schulz; one sister-in-law; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Clara Simon; husband, Joseph Holland; three brothers, Henry, Peter, and Frank; and seven sisters,?Anna, Ida, Minnie, Dora, Clara, Martha, and Mary.
The family requests memorials be given in Lydia’s name to the Grace Lutheran Church, Martin County Historical Society, or Heritage Acres.
