Hazel B. Johnson, 102
Blue Earth Mrs. Hazel Beatrice Johnson, age 102, of Blue Earth, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Brethren Church in Blue Earth. The Rev. Brent Walker officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Patton Funeral Home & Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.
Hazel was born near Ormsby on Sept. 27, 1910, to Hans and Anna (Jacobson) Soma. The family moved to a farm near Canby and then to East Chain where Hazel graduated from High School in 1928. She was married to Nels A. Johnson on Nov. 30, 1930, in Ames, Iowa, where she worked in the college hospital. Nels was a teamster at Iowa State College. Returning to Minnesota they farmed retiring to Blue Earth in 1971. Nels passed away in September of 1983.
Hazel was a member of Faith Lutheran Brethren Church in Blue?Earth. After moving to New Life Manor, she helped at Chapel services and spent many hours visiting the residents of St. Luke’s Care Center. She accepted Jesus as her Savior in her early years. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years giving Flannel Graphs in many different churches and St. Lukes. She is remembered for her quilting, baking, Bible study and crocheting being awarded Grand Champion for her doilies at age 101 at the Faribault County Fair.
Survivors include daughter, Ferne (Dayton) Roesler, of Waseca; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Sisson, of Antioch, Ill.; sister-in-law, June Soma, of Oakdale; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nels; daughter, Phyllis A. Stewart; grandson,?Dennis Stewart; granddaughter-in-law, Phyllis Stewart; three brothers, Gerald, Sanford, and Arnold Soma; and five sisters, Irene Bliss, Jennie Nordaune, Wanda Oftedahl, Alma Stromberg, and Lois Schneider.
