Sister Margaret Mary Gorman, SSND, 88
Mankato Sister Margaret Mary (Mary Luke) Gorman, SSND, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at Good Counsel, Mankato. Her Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Good Counsel Chapel.
Sister Margaret Mary was born in 1925 in rural Martin County to Harry and Mary Julia (McGoff) Gorman, and was baptized at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Guckeen. She attended Blue Earth Public School and graduated from Faribault County School District No. 29 in 1939. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy in Mankato in 1943 and entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame that same year. She professed first vows in 1946, and taught in Catholic elementary and secondary schools in Minnesota, Washington, North Dakota and Iowa for 34 years. In 1980, she became a full-time tutor at the Good Counsel Learning Center, where her specialty was teaching English to students from other countries. By the time of her retirement in 2013, she had taught English to students from over 20 countries.
She is survived by a brother, Edward (Rosemary), brother-in-law, James Furlette, two nieces, two godchildren, many cousins, and by her sisters in community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John, and a sister, Elizabeth Furlette.
