Roger L. Becker, 67

Story City A Memorial mass was held on July 31, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Ledyard, the Father Sunny Dominic officiated.

Roger Lee Becker was born March 5, 1948, in Buffalo Center, son of Raymond and Ruth (Olthoff) Becker. He grew up on a farm near Lakota graduating from St. John’s Catholic High School in Bancroft, in 1966. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville.

Roger was married to Shirley Marlow on May 25, 1968, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft. They farmed near Stevens then began farming the family farm near Lakota. In 1985, they moved into Lakota where Roger worked at the cement plant, later becoming the plant manager.

In the spring of 2002, Roger and Shirley moved to Story City. He worked as a security guard for the U.S.D.A. in Ames until retiring in February 2015. Roger loved watching his grandchildren in all of their activities. He enjoyed spending free time at their lake home on Lake Ponderosa. Roger was a hard worker and also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. While in Lakota, Roger was active in his community serving on city council, the volunteer fire department, and he was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Roger L. Becker died on Sunday evening, July 26, 2015, after a yearlong courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 67.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Story City; four children and 10 grandchildren, Shane (Laura) Becker, of Blue Earth and their children Seth, Eric, and Leah; Jeremy (Amanda) Becker, of Ankeny and their children, Morgan, Kailey, Nathan; Brian (Carrie) Becker, of Clive and their son Ray; and Amber (Ted) Trewin, of Waukee and their daughters Mia and Molly. He is also survived by a special nephew, Tony (Dawn) Becker, of Centennial, Colo. and their daughter Nyah; his mother-in-law, Viola Marlow, of Zearing; and many cousins, and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert Becker and his wife Caroline; and his father-in-law, Harlan Marlow.
