LaVonne Volz

Blue Earth LaVonne Volz, age 93, of Blue Earth passed away with great anticipation of her eternal life, on Aug. 14, 2015, at St. Luke’s Care Center in Blue Earth.

Funeral service was Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blue Earth. Burial will be at Dell Cemetery at a later date.

LaVonne was born Dec. 10, 1921, on a farm in rural Dell, the second child of Alfred and Agnes (Christian) Peterson. She was baptized and confirmed at Dell Lutheran Church, and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, S.D. She graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa and finished her four year degree at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

LaVonne met Robert Ralph Volz while serving lunch to his threshing crew on her father’s farm at Frost. They were married Dec. 23, 1942. Lavonne and Bob moved to the farm at Dell in the spring of 1946 where they raised nine children and farmed for 40 years in the shadow of the Dell church.

Her life was marked and measured by service, work and family. A tireless volunteer, she served on the Frost and Blue Earth School Boards, St. Luke’s Board, and in many capacities in her community and church.

A lifetime learner, she read newspapers daily, loved to discuss the news, and became a crossword expert. She wrote histories of the Dell Store and the Dell Church and then, in her eighties, her own story.

Proud of her Norwegian heritage, she met King Harald when he visited Minneapolis in 1995. Returning home that evening, she informed Bob she couldn’t make supper for him after lunching with the king. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren and showed her love of family in the family gatherings she organized, her open door, and her gracious example and generosity.

Survived by her children Joan Volz, of Welch, Paula (Kevin) Thompson, of Chesterfield, Va., Paulette von Mende, of Chesterfield, Kent (Deb) Volz, of Vasa, Gail (David) George, of Soda Springs, Ind., Bonita (Steve) Zimmer, of Blue Earth, Lynette (John) Messer, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Scott (Lori) Volz, of Blue Earth and Lee Volz, of Inver Grove Heights; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Alphine Bennett, of Clarion, Iowa and brother, Paul Peterson, of Blue Earth.

Preceded by her husband Bob in 2007; son-in-law Aki von Mende; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Burton Peterson, of Fairmont.

Memorials preferred to United Hands Hospice, or charity of choice.
