LaVerne William Morris was born on Oct. 20, 1923, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Vern William and Laura Belle (Hough) Morris. He attended school in Osage and graduated from Osage High School.

On Nov.15, 1942, LaVerne was united in marriage to Phyllis Jane Wilson in Albert Lea. LaVerne was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and was later honorably discharged. The couple made their home in Albert Lea, and later Worthington, and Fairmont.

LaVerne worked for many years for the Montgomery Ward Company in Albert Lea, Worthington, and Fairmont, retiring in December 1985. Growing up Baptist and giving his life to the Lord at an early age, made his faith very important to LaVerne, something he and Phyllis shared. LaVerne could often be found at his table reading the bible, praying, or doing his daily devotion. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Westerns on T.V., reading Louis L’amour books, and watching birds. LaVerne loved to play Santa during the holiday season and was a school crossing guard for many years. Family was extremely important to LaVerne and he treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Connie (Ron) Tuin, of Faribault, and Jeanne (Roger) Subbert, of Fairmont; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Madelon Collette, Phyllis Miller, and Lucille Carlson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Laura Morris; wife, Phyllis Morris; great-granddaughter, Natalie Zimmer; brothers-in-law, Marvin Miller, Jerry Miller and Wayne Miller; and sister-in-law, Avis Johnson.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society and Gideon’s International.
