Apple Valley Pastor Norman Edgar Discher

Norman passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016, after a four year stay at Augustana Care Center, Apple Valley.

He was born March 10, 1932, to Rev. Walter and Florence (Schmidt) Discher in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed and married by his father. Norman attended Lutheran school in Whittemore, Iowa. His high school and junior college years were spent at Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Concordia Lutheran Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1957. He served as a vicar in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1955-56.

Norman married LaDonna (Sunderman) Discher on July 15, 1956, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Clarinda, IA.

Norman was a third generation Lutheran Minister. He served parishes in Blair, Nebraska, Elmore, and rural Annandale, as well as vacancies, including a shared vacancy at Christ Lutheran Church, Eagan. He served as a circuit counselor, LWML advisor and on the Board of Directors at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth. Norman and LaDonna retired in Lakeville.

His loves were his family, playing and watching baseball, and classical music. He also enjoyed playing golf, traveling and following all of his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and activities.

He is survived by loving wife of 59 years, LaDonna, of Lakeville; son, Ken (Lori), of Des Moines, Iowa; son, Brian, of Eagan; daughter, Sharon (Jeff) Johnston, of Farmington; grandchildren, Lee (Allison), Bethany (Jonathan), Courtney and Luke; brother, Paul (Sonja) Discher; brothers in law, LaVern (Jenny) Sunderman, Darrell (Shirley) Sunderman, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held May 12, 2016 at Christ Lutheran Church, in Eagan. Interment, Christ Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to The Lutheran Hour, Concordia Lutheran Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.
