Gertrude Colleen Zeisz, 95

Alameda, CA Gertrude Colleen Young Zeisz, age 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 at her home in Alameda. Colleen was a faithful member of Saint Barnabas Catholic Church in Alameda for almost 70 years. She was born July 31, 1921 and was raised on a farm in Elmore. Her career life was first as a beautician then as a WAVES (Women Accepted for Emergency Voluntary Service) during World War II at Alameda Naval Air Station. Colleen was the first WAVES to achieve a rating of Aviation Ordnanceman with her photo reprinted in newspapers throughout the United States. Colleen met the love of her life and husband of over 60 years, Oscar “Sonny” Zeisz while both served our country in the Navy. Colleen and Oscar settled in Alameda, California after the war and both were active in their church and community throughout their long lives. Colleen and Oscar were accomplished ballroom dancers and toured the world as dance instructors on cruise ships during their vacations as federal employees. Colleen worked as a civilian employee for the Navy and retired as a Senior Budget Analyst.

Colleen is survived by her sister, Maurine Hoffman, of Blue Earth, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Katherine Young; her brothers, Renwick Young and Ronald Young and her beloved husband Oscar.

A funeral mass was held on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Alameda, California. Interment was private.
