Wendal C. Schutjer, 79
Titonka, Iowa A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at United Methodist Church, Titonka.
Wendal Craig Schutjer was born May 27, 1940 at home to Raymond “Doc” and Anna (Welhousen) Schutjer. He was baptized and confirmed at the Titonka United Methodist Church where he remained a life-long member. A 1958 graduate of Titonka Consolidated Schools, Wendal proudly served his country for six years in the Iowa Air National Guard.
On Nov. 17, 1962 Wendal was united in marriage to Mary Foley at St. Mary Catholic Church in Corwith, Iowa. Their family would be completed with the births of Kimberly, Paul, and Janel. Wendal and Mary enjoyed over 57 years together.
Wendal was born to be a farmer. His father would be his mentor and first business partner. Later, his brothers and his own son would join the farm operation. Wendal thoroughly enjoyed the daily routines and challenges of a working family farm. Fall was Wendal’s favorite time of year, and despite declining health, followed and contributed to this years’ harvest.
Wendal’s free time was centered around sports and friendly competition. As a youngster he was a member of Senca Saddle Club. As an adult he enjoyed playing softball for the Woden Fast-Pitch and Titonka Slow-Pitch teams and shooting trap in the Titonka Trap League. Wendal was also a co-owner and mechanic for the “German Valley Special.” The racing team was recently honored with induction in the Kossuth County Racing Hall of Fame. Later in life, Wendal enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Wendal’s children, grandchildren and great-grandson were his greatest joys. He was very proud of all their accomplishments, both on and off the farm.
Wendal died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019 at his home. He was 79.
Those left to cherish Wendal’s memory include his wife, Mary; children, Kim (Terry) Murphy, Paul (La Kaye) Schutjer, and Janel (Russ) Buseman; grandchildren, Dan Irwin, Mark (Kayley) Irwin, Adam Buseman, Zach Buseman, Addison Schutjer, and Beau Schutjer; step-grandchildren, Laci (Dustin) Mortensen, Olivia Erpelding, and Morgan Erpelding; great-grandson, Oliver Irwin; step-great-granddaughters, Hayden and Savannah Mortensen; siblings, Reginald (Joyce) Schutjer, Sandra (Randall) Good, and Dennis (Danette) Schutjer; sister-in-law, Patricia Boysen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Wendal was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Harry and Elizabeth Foley; brother-in-laws, Dennis Foley, Michael Foley, Lester (Bud) Foley, and Gene Boysen; and grandson, Jake Schutjer.
