Kent “Spanky” Ernest Johnston was born on Aug. 26, 1972, in Blue Earth. He was the son of Robert and Joanne (Frette) Johnston. Spanky attended Fairmont public schools and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1991.

On Sept. 20, 1997, Spanky was united in marriage to Nicole Walter at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. This ended marriage was blessed with two beautiful daughters. Spanky later moved to Fairmont, and most recently to North Mankato.

Spanky was employed at 3M in Fairmont for twenty-six years. He was partnered with Greg Cochran and worked as a ground’s keeper and in maintenance. More recently, he took on warehouse duties. Spanky was the second ranked employee at the Fairmont facility. He will be missed by his many coworkers.

During his free time, Spanky enjoyed the outdoors. Along with hunting, fishing, kayaking, and camping, he loved riding his motorcycle. Spanky also liked some quieter times gardening and watching the hummingbirds. Above all else, he loved the time he was able to spend with his family and friends including the time spent with his “biker gang” and Thursday night get-togethers with the guys.

Left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Allison Johnston (Brandon Hartmann), of Fairmont, McKenzie Johnston, of Ceylon, and Anna Nagel, of Blue Earth; granddaughter, Norah Hartmann; parents, Bob and Joanne Johnston, of Fairmont; brother, Robb “Soup” Johnston of Fairmont; grandmother, Gladys Frette; girlfriend, Amy Louwagie of North Mankato, and her daughters, Alyssa (German) Navarro and Maia Louagie; and many, many friends.

Along with his grandparents, Edward and Edna Johnston, Spanky was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ernest Frette; cousin, Sue Frette; and friends, “Cowboy” Collin Kelly, Michelle Iverson and Road Hog, and Dan Nowak.
