Mary L. Corhus, 85

Elmore – Mary Louise Corhus, age 85, formerly of Elmore, passed away on Dec. 14, 2021, at Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, 11 a.m. at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore with Rev. Robert Roettger officiating. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Elmore.

Mary Louise was born on Feb. 10, 1936 to Harold and Katherine (Johnston) Nelson in Boone, Iowa. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at First Baptist Church in Boone, Iowa and was the oldest of three sisters.

She graduated from Boone High School in 1954. She was in band and worked at Boyd’s ice cream store. Mary later attended Boone Community College and Drake University where she obtained her teaching degree. After graduating, she taught elementary school in Grand Junction, Iowa, and Clear Lake, Iowa. While teaching she was set up on a blind date, and on June 24, 1967 she married that man, the love of her life, LuVerne Corhus of Elmore. Their union was blessed with one daughter Karina.

LuVerne and Mary made their home on a farm near rural Elmore where they resided together for over 50 years. Mary was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She grew up as a town girl, but learned to be LuVerne’s partner on the farm, helping with hauling grain, planting, and many other tasks wherever she was needed.

Mary was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, where she served throughout the years as Sunday School teacher, piano player, fellowship coordinator, serving in the kitchen, circle, and in many other ways. Mary enjoyed keeping a lovely home, and spending time with friends and family.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Karina (Daniel), of Sheldon, Iowa; grandchildren, Caleb and Marissa Baker; sisters, Irene Lee and Joyce (Jerry) Johnstone; and many other loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LuVerne; and her parents, Harold and Katherine Nelson.
