Philip E. Fleischer, 77

St. Ansgar, Iowa – Philip ‘Phil’ Eugene Fleischer passed away Jan. 5, 2022 in St. Ansgar, Iowa, where he resided. He was born in Albert Lea, on Oct. 26, 1944, to Al and Julie Fleischer. Phil spent the early years of his childhood in Wells, and then moved to Modesto, California, when he was 10. Two years later, he moved to Sauk Rapids, where he graduated high school.

He voluntarily enlisted in the Army in 1965 and served in Vietnam. He worked with the 9th Med. Lab., which researched vector-borne diseases. In 1972, he graduated from Mankato State University. Seven years after his discharge, he re-enlisted in the Army. He continued his work in medical entomology at bases in the United States, and in Korea and Thailand. After a few years stationed at West Point, he returned to Korea, where he was the non-commissioned officer in-charge of the preventative medicine section. He served in the same capacity when he was later stationed at Walter Reed Medical Center in D.C. He was honorably discharged after 20 years, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa. Phil tirelessly dedicated the next 14 years honoring and advocating for veterans from all wars- writing articles about their achievements, coordinating reunions, and raising funds for their memorials. He also loved researching his family history.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Julie; his brother, Ron; nephew, Brad; great-nephew, Jack; and his first wife, Jean. He leaves behind his loving and dedicated wife, Kanjana; his nephews and nieces, Steve (Marci): Brennen, Marcus; Mark; and Scott (Victoria): Bella, Sam; Rhea: Kristalyn, Alfred, Maria.

A graveside service will be at St. Ansgar Cemetery May 25 at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Schroeder Funeral Homes, Mitchell, Iowa.
