Sara Johnson, 73

Winnebago – Sara Johnson died at her home in Winnebago, under the care of Hospice on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Sara Metzinger Johnson was born on June 29, 1948, the daughter of Emil (Sonny) and Eloise (Whitney) Metzinger, of South St. Paul. Sara attended schools in South St. Paul, graduating with Honors in 1966, and St. Cloud State University, graduating with Honors in 1970 with a degree in French.
Sara taught French in the Wayzata School District for 34 years, retiring in 2006. After retiring she continued to substitute in classrooms and with academic testing. She was addressed as “Madame” in her classrooms by her West Junior High School and Wayzata High School students. Sara was most proud of the West Junior High School Annual Variety Shows she directed for 22 years featuring many students, teachers, and parents; some of whom were known as “Sara’s Ladies.” Sara was also very proud of the 17 French trips she organized for her students and families.
Sara is survived by her husband, Dean Johnson, of Winnebago; her son, Jim (Kortney) Esper, of Crystal; her daughter, Jenny (Kody) Gallagher and grandson, Hugh Gallagher, of Delano.
A Celebration of Life for Sara will be held on Friday, March 25, from 7-9 p.m. at the David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata.
