James Hassing, 95

Easton – James “Jim” Hassing, age 95, of Easton, died Monday, March 13, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Wells, surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at OLMC Catholic Church in Easton. Military Honors were accorded by the Easton American Legion Post and burial was in OLMC Catholic Cemetery, Barber Township, Faribault County, Minnesota. Jim was born Dec. 16, 1927, in rural Easton, son of John G. and Anna (Bracco) Hassing. He attended up to eighth grade at OLMC, and received his high school diploma from Wells-Easton High school in 2000. It was given to him later in life because he chose to join the Navy and serve his country at a young age. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1946, stationed at Pearl Harbor (Fort Island), Hawaii, Yeoman Third Class. In 1947, he came home and farmed in rural Easton which is now a Century Farm. On Nov. 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to Florence Ann Schrader in Easton.

Jim was a member of OLMC, Knights of Columbus, volunteered for the Easton Fire Department for 12 years beginning in 1957, bartender at the Easton American Legion, a seasonal field man for Green Giant, a member of the Easton American Legion Post #569 for 77 years; since 1946, and a life member of the Wells VFW. He was also a founding member of the Easton American Legion Post. Jim enjoyed farming, coffee with friends, playing cards, flowers, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be especially remembered for his gift to gab and his joy of giving; making raspberry jam which made him known as the “The Jam Man,” handing out ice cream treats at the clinic and hospital, and raising squash and giving it away so others could enjoy it during the holidays. Many will remember how he was always available to be a driver for appointments and deliveries.

Jim is survived by his children: Shari (Casey) Sullivan, of Seattle, Washington, Susan (Britt) Hendrickson, of Wells, Shawn and (Sue Trio) Hassing, of Blue Earth, Linda Hassing, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Lori (Paul) Frederick, of Gilbert, Arizona, John Hassing, of Phoenix, Arizona, and daughter-in-law, Sherrie (Klein) Hassing, of Blue Earth; 14 grandchildren: Jennie (Buddy) Sichmeller, Katie (Dennis) Becker, Shane (Stacie) Hassing, Corey Sullivan, Jon (Brittany) Voigt, Matthew (Emily) Hassing, Thomas (Ashton) Voigt, Joseph (Morgan) Frederick, Stephanie (Ross) Benz, Jessica Emory, Johnny Sullivan, Kate (Miah) Fogarty, Lacey Hassing, and Krista (Pete) Johnson; 22 great grandchildren; and three sisters: Lorraine (Bob) Sauer, Elaine Klaventer, and Katie Hassing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence in 2003; son, Steven in 1995; son-in-law, Mike Voigt in 1996; brothers, Maynard and Phillip; sisters, Rosemary Jones and Irene Franzen.
