Wayne A. Feder, 84

 A few years ago, I happened to ask my dad why he always read non-fiction books instead of novels. He cupped his hands over his head and said, “I know, I know, I should read more fiction. But there’s just so much to learn!”

While no one person can ever be summarized by a single sentence, in this case, “There’s just so much to learn!” comes close. Wayne was endlessly fascinated by the world around him, and approached life with infectious enthusiasm. His interests were wide and ever expanding; many will remember him as their favorite teacher or coach. Others will think of him as an avid birder, or a champion pigeon fancier, or a lover of shorthorn cattle. Some will remember his passion for genealogy, or history, or ecology; they’ll think of his gleeful humor or the surprising stock of poetry he could recite from the top of his head. Some will have read the books that he wrote, or driven past the prairies that he planted. They’ll remember how much he enjoyed cheering for the Twins, and the Gophers, and the Vikings, but also for the underdog, whoever they might have been. They’ll think of his curiosity, of his respect for the natural world, and for his love of good, honest competition.

He’ll be remembered as a brother, and an uncle, and a friend. As someone who loved his hometown of Madelia, Minnesota, as well as all of the communities that he taught in. He’ll be remembered as a loving husband, a wonderful father, and a doting grandfather.

He’ll be remembered in so many ways.

But, most of all, he’ll be remembered.
