Mary I. Overfield, 82
Northfield – Mary Isabelle Johnson Overfield, a beloved wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026. Born Nov. 13, 1943 in Buffalo Center, IA to Marian Halvorson Johnson (Frost, MN) and Oliver Johnson (Rake, IA)
Mary was the third child in a family of seven siblings, five boys and two girls. She grew up in the small town of Frost, MN and was an excellent student. In 1959, she married Kenneth Overfield from Elmore, MN. They lived in St. Paul and Blaine, MN, for a few years and then moved to their beloved Coon Lake near East Bethel, MN.
Mary found joy in simple pleasures that included living on the lake, cooking meals for her family, playing bridge, sewing, the birds, her Siamese cats, pontoon rides, traveling with their camper, her children, and grandchildren.
Following a car accident in 1979 and her subsequent journey with early-onset dementia, Mary and Ken relied on their strong faith. They were active members of Way of the Cross church, where Mary loved to sing. Ken cared for her devotedly until his passing in 2020. Mary later moved to Three Links Care Center in Northfield, MN, to be near her sister, Christy. There, she continued to enjoy singing, participating in activities, and playing bingo.
Mary is survived by her son, David (Linda) Overfield Aurora, CO; daughter, Sherri Overfield Sladek, Zephyrhills, FL; and by her siblings, Tony (Betty) Johnson, Alexandria, MN, Tom Johnson, Walker, MN, Jon Johnson, Baltimore, MD, and Christy Valek, Northfield, MN; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Three Links for their exceptional care and kindness.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 13 at Bethel Lutheran Church of Northfield with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Friends of Coon Lake. Though she will be deeply missed, Mary will live on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the countless lives she touched with her kindness. Arrangements are with the Bierman, Benson, & Langehough Funeral Home. www.northfieldfuneral.com
