What’s the GIANT buzz at the Register?
Yes, there certainly has been some excitement over the last few months at the Register office. And borrowing a buzz word from Blue Earth Chamber executive director Cindy Lyon, “It’s something GIANT!”
Many of the Register staffers are seasoned veterans. That’s a polite way of saying a few of us have been in the newspaper business for quite a while. With that said, it’s not an easy task coming up with something that hasn’t been done in the last 35-plus years. But we did.
The Register’s GIANT project hit the streets last week, being delivered to those advertisers who invested in this fun keepsake.
It’s a first-ever, one-of-a-kind, limited-edition comic map of Blue Earth.
If you haven’t ever heard of a comic map, or as some call it a cartoon or fun map, I’ll do my best to describe it to you.
A comic map is a creative way to promote the community you live in. Our comic map is a 24″x36″ professionally-drawn poster portraying the uniqueness of Blue Earth businesses and our community.
The Register sales staff started working on this project several months ago and it really took off. Their enthusiasm about the project was contagious – so contagious that more than 85 Blue Earth businesses jumped on the comic map bandwagon.
Each individual advertiser told us how they wanted their business depicted and our artist went to town with their suggestions, creating unique caricatures of either their business location, a work vehicle of some kind, maybe a billboard, or in some cases, the business owner himself. You’ll recognize them all.
Being such a success, we printed more copies than anticipated – 2,000 to be exact.
You may be asking, “How can I get my hands on one of those posters before they’re all gone?”
To begin with, we will be kicking off a community fundraiser today with the cooperation of the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce. Stop by the Register or Chamber office with one food shelf item and receive your free copy of the map. Donations will be given to the Faribault County Food Shelf at the end of the month.
You will also be able to see the comic map on our website (www.faribaultcountyregister.com). It’s not only fun to view, but when your mouse hovers over any one of the businesses, an information box will appear with the business name, address, phone number and map directions. If that’s not enough information for you, it will also link you to their own website or Facebook page.
We also plan on distributing the maps to each participating business and giving one to new residents and visitors.
We thank the participating businesses for breaking out of their comfort zone, giving something new a try and investing in the community.
Like I said earlier, something GIANT has arrived in Blue Earth and we hope you all enjoy it.
