Where are the prisoners?
To the Editor:
The taxpayers of Faribault County should know that as of Dec. 17, there were a total of four prisoners in the old and outdated jail. One female was being held in another county facility.
The old jail is rated to house 18 prisoners with the new jail able to house 50-60 prisoners. At this rate the new jail will be good until the year 2500 when the county population is around 5,000. Maybe we should be thanking our county commissioners for thinking that far ahead.
I still believe the decision to spend $13 million for a new jail – plus another $13 million in interest (that we taxpayers have to pay) – is the worst decision to ever come out of the Faribault County Courthouse.
The good news is that none of the four current prisoners is Santa Claus or his Elves and we should be in for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, at least until our property tax statements arrive.
