Some strange things, and it is not even Halloween … yet
It was a pretty strange week. Strange things were happening all over.
I knew it was going to be weird. While driving home on Sunday evening last week and heading west through Faribault County, the remains of the sunset glowed in the west, while in my rear view mirror a huge harvest full moon was on the rise.
That is always a sign that lots of strange things are about to happen, or already are happening.
Let me give you a few examples.
The Minnesota Vikings looked like superstars who could beat any team that ever was during most of the first half of their game against Chicago. Then in the second half it looked as if they couldn’t beat a junior high school team.
Yet, very strangely, the Vikings pulled it out at the end of the game, have a 4-1 record and sit atop the NFC Central.
Weird!
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers, too, had a miracle at the end of their game against Maple River.
I mean, really. Eight-tenths of a second on the clock and they get a come-from-behind victory? You have to admit that doesn’t happen every day of the week.
How about having it be over 80 degrees on Tuesday, and colder than all get out on Wednesday? Pretty weird if you ask me, but actually, I guess it is sort of normal for Minnesota.
How about the strange story of two steers “escaping” from the Blue Earth Locker?
It is true. They made a break for it, broke down the chain link fence at the fairgrounds, ran through the city campground, followed the Blue Earth River, crossed under Highway 169 and were in Steinberg Park. Both were eventually located.
You gotta call that just a little bit strange, don’t you? It does, however, remind me of a true story from years ago in a town called Tyler.
A steer was being unloaded at the Tyler Locker in the middle of winter when it made a run for freedom.
The locker’s parking lot, and the street it was located on, were both snowpacked.
One of the owners of the locker grabbed the tail of the runaway steer and was pulled, standing up, through the parking lot and down the street, looking like he was water skiing in the summer.
One of the residents who lived on the street saw it all happen and told me, “It was the strangest looking thing I ever did see.”
Now for one last strange thing. Well, maybe not so strange, as just being very different.
It seems there is a nail polish color that is named “Blue Earth, MN.” I am not kidding, it is not just named Blue Earth, but Blue Earth, MN.
It is made by a company called DND Daisy Nail Products, located on East Palma Avenue, in Anaheim, California. You know, the home of Disneyland.
So, I thought I would give them a call and ask them how they came about having a nail polish named Blue Earth MN.
The nice person I finally got through to said simply, she didn’t really know why.
It was named by a former employee about five years ago. He named a lot of nail polish colors after geographic locations, such as Red Box Canyon, Orange County CA, or Smokey Mountains Grey.
He probably found Blue Earth, Minnesota, on a map, or Googled it, she surmised. She was pretty sure he was not from Blue Earth or had ever been here.
I thanked her for her time, but I was a little disappointed there wasn’t more to the story.
She did mention that it was a very popular color and they ship a lot of it out to nail salons all over the country.
Another strange part to this story is that I was alerted to the Blue Earth MN nail polish by two movie producers out in California.
OK, it was Bryan Simon and former Blue Earth resident Marjorie Engesser. I have done a couple of stories about their books and movies they have produced.
In fact, a movie Bryan made in 2000 is now out on DVD. It is called “Along for the Ride,” a story about a car, two brothers, a dead dad and some baseball.
I’m guessing it is a little bit, you know … strange. And probably quite good.
