Are you ready for another batch of those infamous Cheers and Jeers?
It’s been a while since we sent out some of our Cheers and Jeers, so there are quite a few on the list.
Some you probably can guess, but others maybe not so much.
We better get right to it.
First off, we give a round of Cheers to all of the spring sport athletes who did well and especially those who made it to the State, or nearly did. That includes Blue Earth Area girl golfers Payten Gudahl and Katelyn Storbeck and BEA track team pole vaulter Addison Armstrong. Also, USC’s golfers Kayden Neubauer and Emma Heggen and track team member Brant Blosser. Congrats to all of them, with an extra tip of the hat to Addison for her fourth-place finish.
A Jeer goes out to the fact that one of Blue Earth’s big industries, Nortech, is moving out of its plant by the end of the year. While we understand the business decision behind it, it is still a blow to the community.
Hopefully something will be able to fill the large building they are vacating.
A bunch of Cheers go out to all of our area high school graduates, at United South Central, Blue Earth Area, as well as the first graduates at Genesis Classical Academy. Congrats to all of the Class of 2024 seniors. We wish all of them success in whatever they do with their futures.
A sad Jeer goes out to the fact that the infamous Saga of the Three Sisters looks like it is going to come to an end many of us were hoping was not going to happen. Demolition. It is a shame.
While it appears to be the end to this nearly 20-year saga, it is not totally unexpected.
A Cheer goes out to all of those folks who have had a part in creating the New Chances Humane Society. Their new facility in the West Industrial Park is very nice, and quite a difference from what the previous facility was. And, they seem to have a new organizational structure in place as well.
We wish them well as they continue their work.
A big Cheer to the County Board for finally successfully filling several major positions in the county and a lot of other employee positions as well.
We are sure the commissioners themselves are giving out a Cheer.
A welcoming Cheer goes out to county assessor Brady Rauenhorst, county engineer April Wellman and county auditor/treasurer Kari Jacobson. It is great to have a full staff in place once again.
A Cheer goes out to the Blue Earth Chamber and the city of Blue Earth for working together on getting the Green Giant statue repaired and putting on a new coat of paint. There is a pretty good cost involved, but this guy deserves it as he works outside in all types of weather welcoming folks to Blue Earth. It is amazing how we did not really notice he had faded a bit, until he got some new paint and it popped out.
A Cheer to the city of Blue Earth for deciding to redo the tennis courts at Putnam Park. After years of doing patching, it is good to see a total reconstruction going on. This Cheer includes all of the folks who are helping make this a reality with some donations, too. We can add another Cheer to the city for all of the improvements to Steinberg Park, one of the best kept secrets in town, and one of our favorite places.
However, a Jeer must be made for the removal of the Disc Golf at Putnam Park. We understand it was in need of repair, but we also understand it was something that was being used quite a bit. Hopefully, a new spot can be found for it to return.
A double Cheer and Jeer goes out to Mother Nature and the weather. The Cheer is for the drought being over. The Jeer is that we seem to be getting a lot of rain and stormy weather, causing some issues, particularly with spring planting. And, you were probably expecting a Jeer for the mosquito population boom, and so here it is.
One final Cheer to a couple of groups who are working to bring some new and creative things to Blue Earth. One is trying to get a new inclusive playground at Giant Park. The other is working hard to get a new natural history museum open, which will be a continuation of the dinosaur/fossil discovery center, but with a whole lot more interesting things.
Look for news that it will be opening soon.
We thank both groups for working hard to make our community a little bit nicer.
I guess there is one more Cheer that needs to be added. A Cheer to all of you, our faithful readers, advertisers and others who support the Faribault County Register.
Thanks for reading us.
