A closer look at the Super Bowl
Did you watch the Super Bowl last Sunday?
Of course you did. Maybe a little of it, maybe a lot of it.
I watched it all.
I had talked to some friends and we had agreed it would be the Eagles’ defense against the Chiefs’ offense. It turned out that way, but it was the Eagles’ defense that dominated the game. They literally put on a clinic.
I, like many others, thought the game might be high scoring, and it eventually was. But a 7-0 first quarter score seemed to indicate a low scoring game at first.
It was amazing that the much celebrated Kansas City Chiefs and their dynamic duo of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Taylor Swift’s boyfriend were held scoreless in the first quarter, second quarter and almost in the third quarter. They finally scored with 34 seconds left in that third quarter.
No one could possibly have predicted that would happen.
Some folks tell me that they quit watching the game at halftime. Some say it was in the third quarter they quit. I kept watching until the very end.
Of course, I also watch the Super Bowl each year for the commercials. I tried hard not to miss any. Some were very entertaining, I thought. Some were thought-provoking. And a few were pretty dumb. Even Blue Earth’s Jolly Green Giant made an appearance in one of the commercials. Did you catch that?
And how about that halftime show? Did you like it, love it or hate it?
I tend to go with the ‘I thought it was really bad’ category, but then I admit I am an old guy living in the rural Midwest. But really, it seemed really dumb and not very entertaining to me. I had not heard of the rapper/artist/singer, and to be honest, I could not really understand a word he said – or ‘sang.’ I guess there was some sort of a message people tell me, but I have no idea what that message was.
On a positive note, this halftime show was bad enough in my mind that maybe it could take the dishonor of worst Super Bowl halftime show ever away from Minnesota.
Yep. That is correct. On the list of worst ones ever, we lead the list. It was in 1992 and the Super Bowl was in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. As I recall, it was supposed to be some sort of tribute to the Winter Olympics, which were not even going to be in Minnesota or even the U.S. that year. It was called “Winter Magic” and it was pretty lame. It had the U of M Marching Band and Gloria Estefan and some Olympic athletes, but the stage and decorations were pretty amateurish.
In the early days of the Super Bowl, the halftime shows were not big productions. In 1975 when my parents went to the Super Bowl when the Vikings were playing in Tulane University Stadium, it was a trumpet salute to Duke Ellington and a college marching band.
Now it is super stars and massive productions.
Of course, a lot has changed since then. Commercials during the Super Bowl cost $8 million per 30 seconds. Tickets to the game were an average of $8,000 each. The highest was $24,000 per ticket! No wonder only high paid entertainers can go these days. It is certainly not the $12.50 each my parents paid in 1975.
This year, to be honest, I really enjoyed some of the entertainment that was shown before the game actually started.
There was a salute to America that was narrated by Brad Pitt. I thought it was awesome, especially with the divisiveness going on in the country these days.
Then there was the piece that had Tom Brady and Michael Strahan and the other football guys walking down Bourbon Street in their New Orleans Strong T-shirts, with Lady Gaga singing and playing the piano with lots of firefighters, law enforcement and others.
I know it sounds kind of weird but actually it was pretty incredible and awe-inspiring. It also was about Americans coming together,
So did I enjoy watching the Super Bowl this year? Yeah, I did. It was an interesting game to watch unfold, I thought, although some others thought it to be boring and wanted a closer, more exciting game with a last second win by one of the teams.
And one other reason I enjoyed the game. The Vikings were not in it. Had they been, I would have been a nervous wreck. This way, I didn’t care which team won and could watch the game and the commercials and be relaxed.
On the other hand, what if the Vikes had been there, and their defense had shut down Patrick Mahomes like the Eagles did?
Well, there is always next year…
