Holiday Tournament returns

By Staff | Dec 25, 2016

The 23rd annual Blue Earth Area Holiday Basketball Tournament returns to town on Tuesday, Dec. 28, complete with a two-day slate of games for four different schools.

Including teams from BEA, United South Central (USC), Jackson County Central (JCC) and Granada Huntley East Chain-Truman-Martin Luther (GHEC-T-ML), the holiday tourney opens on Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. with a varsity girls matchup between JCC and GHEC-T-ML, followed by a boys game at 3 p.m.

Both are set to be played at BEA High School.

That is also where the Buccaneers will begin tournament play, as the varsity girls will take on USC at 5:30 p.m. before the boys take the court for their own showdown with the Rebels at 7:30 p.m.

The JV Bucs will square off on the hardwood the same day, as the boys will take on USC at the BEA Middle School gym at 5:30 p.m. The girls follow with a bout against the JV Rebels at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Dec. 29, the second and final day of the tournament, the varsity Buc girls would host either the JCC Huskies or GHEC-T-ML Jaguars at 3 p.m. if they win their Tuesday game. If they fall to USC in the opening round, they would take on the loser of the Huskies-Jaguars battle at 1 p.m. instead.

Meanwhile, at 5:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. at the high school, the varsity maroon and gold boys would take on either the winner or loser of JCC and GHEC-T-ML’s game, depending on whether or not the Buccaneers were victorious on Tuesday. If they win, the 7:30 p.m. time slot would be theirs.

As for JV matchups on Wednesday, girls game winners square off at 3 p.m. and losers compete at 1 p.m.

Boys, then, hit the court for 5:30 p.m. games.

Adult tickets to the BEA Holiday Basketball Tournament are $6, while the student price is $4. Tickets are good for admission at both sites, the high school and middle school, during the tourney.
