Hunter Spencer delivers a perfect putt for the Blue Earth Area boys during the Big South Conference meet in Worthington on May 23, when the Bucs finished seventh among 14 competing teams and earned three individual all-Big South Conference honors.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team came in seventh out of the 14 teams competing at the Big South Conference Golf Meet in Worthington last Monday afternoon.

And, three Buccaneer varsity golfers claimed All-Conference honors, based both on what they shot last Monday and their accumulated points during the season’s conference dual meets.

Hunter Spencer, Gaven Bruellman and Manning Lane all made the All-BSC team. Spencer had 340 points and was eighth on the list of 18 All-Conference golfers. Bruellman, with 334 points was 11th, and Lane, with 304 points, was 16th.

At Worthington, the Bucs as a team shot a total of 333 which put them in seventh place, just one stroke back of sixth place Waseca’s 332.

Worthington and Marshall tied for the low team tally in the BSC Tournament on Monday, with identical scores of 312. However Worthington claimed the BSC Championship with 132 conference points to Marshall’s 116.

Jackson County Central claimed third with 321, and New Ulm and St. Peter tied for fourth with identical scores of 328.

For the Bucs, Spencer led the way with an even 80 (40-40). Bruellman was right behind him with an 81 (40-41).

Lane shot a 38 on the front nine, but came in with a 46 on the back for a score of 84. Braden Gudahl carded an 88 (46-42) to round out the Bucs’ team tally.

Besides there being two sets of ties among the teams, two players, Worthington’s Ben Keopsell and Marshall’s Spencer Ehlers, tied for medalist honors with identical 72s. And two players also shot identical 73s to tie for third place.

Buccaneer boys coach Travis Armstrong said the team is going to have to get a little bit better.

“We have the Section Meet in one week, so it’s time to fine tune and work on getting that total down around 324 or so,” the coach says. “If we get there we can compete against anyone in the Section. Most of the adjustments are going to have to come on the mental side for everyone. The ability is obviously there, they just need to believe in themselves and play for each other.”

The Section 2AA boys golf meet starts on Tuesday, May 30, and continues on Monday, June 5, at the New Prague Golf Course. The top two boys teams from the first day, and the top five players not on those teams and anyone else within five strokes of the fifth place player move on to play in the second round on June 5.

“There is a lot of stress that first day and watching the scoreboard to see where everyone is at,” Armstrong says. “Stressful except if you are one of the top two teams and we hope to be one of those!”
