Members of the Buccaneer boys golf team – and their coach, Travis Armstrong – pose for a photo with their Section 2AA championship trophy after taking first place and earning a trip to the State Golf Meet this week. Below, Buccaneer girls golfer Mateja Lane, right, with her coach, Carol Weerts, after Lane also earned a trip to the State Tournament. All the players are wearing their Section medals.

Section champs!

The Blue Earth Area boys golf team followed up an excellent first round of golf at the Section 2AA Golf Tournament by shooting two strokes lower at the second round last Monday.

And winning the Section championship by five strokes over second place St. Peter 658-663.

The Bucs will now head to the State Meet to compete both as a team and as individuals.

And that is not all; BEA’s lone girl golfer entrant at the second day of the Section 2AA Meet came in with a great second round score and also qualified for the State Tournament.

Mateja Lane had shot an 18-hole total of 96 on her first round on day one to qualify for the second round, then shaved eight strokes off that score to card an 88 for a two day tally of 183 earning her a trip to State.

Lane came in at eighth place overall at the Section Tourney.

All four Buccaneer boys placed in the top 15 at the Section Tournament.

The Bucs were led by eighth grader Braden Gudahl who came in with the two day total of 159 (82-77), good for third place at the Section.

BEA sophomore Hunter Spencer was in sixth place with his score of 164 (85-79), while eighth grader Manning Lane carded a 167 (81-86) for 11th place, and freshman Gaven Bruellman was tied for 13th with his score of 168 (82-86).

“This was a great learning experience for the boys,” Buc coach Travis Armstrong says. “Last year we were excited to make day two as a team via a fifth score tiebreaker. They were able to play themselves into the day one lead year that alone was an accomplishment, but winning day two outright and the whole tournament was icing on the cake.”

The coach says taking the Section championship and heading to the State as a team was truly a team effort.

“Braden and Hunter showed great moxie on the course to lead the way,” Armstrong says. “While Gaven and Manning dug deep over their last four holes to get the team across the finish line with the lead.”

Armstrong points out that the last team to qualify for the State Tournament was the 2005 team when Jon Trasamar was a sophomore. Trasamar just missed the cut off at the U.S. Open by only six strokes in Ohio on Monday the same day the Bucs earned the trip to State.

The last State championship team was in 1995 when Gudahl’s father, Shawn, was on the team.

The Class AA State Golf Tournament will be played on June 13-14 at the Ridges at Sand Creek course in Jordan.

One United South Central High School golfer also qualified for the State Tournament after placing at the Section 2A Meet last Monday at the North Links Golf Club in Mankato.

Girls team golfer Morgan Pyzick also qualified for State with a score of 213.

The State Class A Golf Tournament is slated for June 13-14 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
