Boys Golf takes 8th at State

By Staff | Jun 16, 2017

Hunter Spencer finished with a score of 173.

While they did not place high at the State Golf Tournament as a team, the young Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team considered it a great learning experience.

The Bucs as a team placed eighth in Class AA with a team score of 666.

But one of their members did exceptional well. Gaven Bruellman, a freshman, was tied for 14th place after day one of the two-day event, then ended up tied for 21st place in the end, shooting a 151 (36-37, 39-39).

“This was a great tournament for Gaven,” Buc coach Travis Armstrong said. “I am proud of all the guys and how well they represented BEA and our local communities.”

Eighth grader Manning Lane fired a two-day total of 168 (43-42, 42-41) and ended up in a tie for 75th place.

Buc sophomore Hunter Spencer came in tied at 78th place with a score of 173 (45-40, 44-44), and Braden Gudahl, another eighth grader, was one stroke back at 174 (44-40, 45-45) and tied for 83rd place.

BEA’s other two varsity golfers competing at State were seventh grader Nathan Murphy in 87th place with a 218 (56-58, 48-56) and Tate Thielfoldt who carded a 222 (59-64, 46-53) for 88th place.

“Nate and Tate showed great resiliency and shaved double digits strokes off of their first day scores,” coach Armstrong said. “Each of the players had positives at State they will recall for a lifetime.”

The course at The Ridges at Sand Creek was “toughened up” on the second day of the tournament, held last Tuesday and Wednesday, June 13-14, coach Armstrong added.

“It was tougher play on day two, and our scores reflected that,” he said. “It is possible that our inexperience played a role as well.”

In first place at State Class AA, was The Blake School with a team tally of 587. Second was Holy Family with 601, third was Detroit Lakes with 605, fourth Hermantown at 616, fifth St. Cloud Cathedral at 626, sixth Lake City with 630 and seventh New Ulm at 658.

State Tournament medalist was Cecil Belisle of Redwing who fired a 139 (34-34, 35-36).

Coach Armstrong had one final comment to make about the State Tournament.

“I hope the boys have a great summer tournament season,” he commented. “And that we can build on this experience for next year.”

Girls Tournament Results

In the Class AA Girls Golf Tournament, the Buccaneers’ lone entry, Mateja Lane ended up in a four-way tie for 64th place.

The BEA sophomore fired a two-day total score of 197 (49-50, 53-44).

At the Girls Class A Tournament held in Becker, United South Central junior Morgan Pyzick ended up in 65th place.

Her two day tally was a 206 (53-51, 50-52).
