Pirates rained out Wednesday

By Staff | Jul 2, 2017

The Jackson Bulls had a hard time solving Pirates’ pitcher Garrett Anderson on June 23. The big righty notched five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Blue Earth Pirates were feeling extremely confident heading into their June 28 game against the Cleveland Spiders. The last time these two teams met on June 4, the Pirates disposed of the Spiders in a 15-2 wipeout.

Early on, things looked very similar to the first meeting as the Pirates scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second. Blue Earth collected seven hits while jumping out to a commanding 8-0 lead after two full innings.

In between the second and third innings, a light drizzle of rain began. It was not enough to initially postpone the game, so the two teams played on. As starting Pirates’ pitcher Lee Hodges worked against the first batter of the third inning, a heavy downpour quickly put a halt to the game.

Massive amounts of rain inundated the field for roughly 20 minutes. After the storm was over, field conditions were not suitable to continue. The game was called off at 8:50 p.m. and a make-up date has not yet been determined.

Irish 8, Pirates 2

On June 24, the Pirates fell to the St. Patrick Irish 8-2. The six run loss happened to be Blue Earth’s largest margin of defeat this season.

Pirates’ pitcher Cody Sukalski had a rough night on the hill, surrendering six earned runs on 15 hits. Outfielder Zachary Schonrock was the only Blue Earth batter to record a multi hit game in the contest. Mother Nature did not cooperate in this contest either as there was a one-hour rain delay during the game.

Pirates 7, Bulls 2

A more favorable outcome occurred for the Pirates against the Jackson Bulls on June 23. The Pirates took care of business at home that night, winning easily 7-2.

Lee Hodges singled to right field in the home half of the first inning to give Blue Earth their first run of the game. Then in the third inning, Jackson threatened to break the game open.

The Bulls managed to load the bases with only one out. However, Blue Earth pitcher Garrett Anderson remained calm under pressure as he only allowed a single run in the frame. Anderson would go on to earn the win as he pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two runs while striking out five.

The Pirates answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. During the inning, Kane Malo of Blue Earth dove in awkwardly into first base and came up limping after the play. Malo also came up limping after a diving attempt at a sharply hit grounder in the top of the sixth. Shaken but not stirred, Malo remained in the lineup for the duration of the game.

Blue Earth tacked on two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh. Malo delivered the coup de grce with a two-run single in the eighth inning that helped put the game out of reach.

The Pirates were in action on July 1 against the New Market Muskies. Results of this game will appear in the next edition of the Faribault County Register.
