Waterville travels to BE and dominates Pirates

Brandyn Olsen on the basepaths after his RBI double in the first inning against Waterville this past Sunday. It was a rough day on the mound for Olsen as he surrendered three home runs in six innings of work.

It was certainly a rough day at the office for the Blue Earth Pirates (14-4) on Sunday, July 9. The Pirates were steamrolled at the Faribault County Fairgrounds by the Waterville Indians, 14-5. This was the second time that Blue Earth has fallen to Waterville this season.

Coming into this game, Pirates’ starting pitcher Brandyn Olsen sported a 4-0 record with a .69 ERA on the year. That all changed in the top of the first inning as Waterville Indians’ third baseman Ben Boran did his best Aaron Judge impersonation and hit a moon shot to deep left center. The solo homerun was lifted so high in the air, it bounced off the Veteran’s Field scoreboard located in the left center field gap.

Olsen atoned for his pitching woes with an RBI double in the bottom half of the frame. However, three BE errors in the third inning led to two more Indian runs.

Boran victimized Olsen again with another towering solo homerun in the fifth inning that cleared the green wall in center field. This made the score 5-1 in favor of Waterville. In addition to his hot bat, Boran’s stellar glove work on the hot corner helped to prevent several hits on the afternoon.

As the score continued to get out of hand, frustration mounted in the Pirates dugout. Kane Malo of the Pirates routinely gave the home plate umpire a piece of his mind and nearly was ejected.

In the top of the seventh, Pirates’ pitcher Garrett Anderson came in to relieve the struggling Olsen. However, Anderson struggled with his command and the Indians were able to add to their lead. Heading into the seventh inning stretch, the Indians enjoyed an 11-3 lead over the Pirates.

Pirates 11, Braves 1

Blue Earth’s ballgame against the Waseca Braves on July 8 yielded much different results. The Pirates needed only eight innings to take care of matters on Saturday. The Pirates produced a whopping 20 total hits while scoring their 11 runs. Cody Sukalski pitched seven strong innings en route to his fourth win of the season. Alan Davids and Kaylan Legred led the way on offense with two doubles a piece.

Blue Earth’s July 1 game against New Market was cancelled. However, the Pirates were in action against the Cleveland Spiders on July 13. This contest was a continuation from a rainout on June 28. Results of this game will appear in the next edition of the Faribault County Register.
