W/BE Legion team loses heartbreaker, season ends

By Staff | Jul 23, 2017

Day 3 of the Division II, 2nd District consolation bracket on July 16 at Veterans Field proved to be a disappointing end to tournament play for Winnebago/Blue Earth Post 82 and 89. By virtue of a five run rally in the seventh inning, Blue Earth ended up losing to Adrian, 5-4.

WBE generated all of its scoring in the first inning. Kaylan Legred led off with a single, then took another base on a fielding error. Alan Davids drove in Legred by virtue of a double later in the inning.

Zac Schonrock somehow avoided a tag at first to reach base safely. Then, Hunter Bleess drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Karson Legred worked a bases loaded walk to score Davids, and two additional Blue Earth runs scored on an error and a fielder’s choice.

The four run first inning was not enough of a cushion for starting pitcher Schonrock. He ended up allowing five runs, all in the final inning. On the afternoon, Schonrock allowed seven hits, a walk, and a hit batter, while striking out three in six-plus innings of work.

Luverne 11, WBE 4

On July 15, Luverne Post 123 beat Winnebago/Blue Earth Post 82 and 89 soundly, 11-4. This loss sent WBE into the consolation bracket in American Legion tournament play.

According to Winnebago Blue Earth head coach Steve Sonnicksen, his team beat themselves with costly walks and defensive mistakes early in the ballgame.

Two Post 82 and 89 errors helped Luverne to three runs in the first inning. Post 123 added four more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead which put the game out of reach.

It was a rough day at the office for WBE starting pitcher Alan Davids who surrendered eight runs on ten hits in 6 2/3 innings.

WBE 10, Wabasso 8

Winnebago/Blue Earth Post 82 and 89 defeated Wabasso Post 263, 10-8, in their opening-round game on July 14.

The WBE defense struggled, as did ace pitcher Logan Jahnke in the ballgame. Jahnke allowed three runs through four innings with one of those runs being unearned. Wabasso benefited by a Jahnke balk in the second inning that drove in a run.

For all their struggles defensively, WBE enjoyed a massive explosion offensively against Wabasso. University of Minnesota Duluth bound Kaylan Legred got the party started with a leadoff double in the first inning. He then stole third base and scored on Zac Schonrock’s RBI groundout later in the frame.

All told, WBE tallied seven runs while Wabasso starter Devan Liebl was on the mound. In fact, WBE scored six runs and sent 10 men to the plate in the second inning. Winnebago Blue Earth enjoyed an 8-2 lead after three innings of play.

Things got too close for comfort in the fourth and fifth innings as Wabasso reeled off five unanswered runs. However, WBE fought back in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs of their own.

Caelan Sanders ripped a single to lead off the fifth and Kaylan Legred was intentionally walked. Zac Schonrock knocked in both runners with a triple that rolled all the way to the right field wall. This proved to be too much for Wabasso to overcome as WBE came away victorious in the Division II, 2nd District tournament game.
