BLUE EARTH AREA SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Blue Earth Area, I.S.D #2860 was held on Monday March 11, 2013 in Blue Earth, MN.
Present were School Board members: J. Haugh, M. Eckhardt, D. Fellows, V. Hanson, F. Bly, M. Maher and T. Cahill.
Also attending were Supt. Gough, members of the press, staff and public.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairperson Bly. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
On an Hanson/Haugh motion the board approved the agenda. Unanimous approval.
The Agenda was approved on a Hanson/Haugh motion.
Public input: None
On an Eckhart/Fellows motion, the board unanimously approved the minutes from the February meeting.
The board unanimously approved seven money transfers in the amount of $1,576,299.11. Fellows/Haugh motion.
Chairperson’s report: Chairman Bly congratulated the wrestlers from BEA that made it to the State Tournament.
Superintendents Report:
Evan Gough shared that March was Music in Our Schools Month with many events to Show case the talents of our youth. It was reported that the state’s financial report was better than expected. The tax shift that is owed the school will now move from 82.5% 86.4%. The first of four strategic planning sessions that will be held at the South Central Service Coop in North Mankato was held on March 5th. It focused on Governance vs. Management of our Schools. March 18th will be the next session.
Committee Reports: None
Principal Reports:
Cue reported that a voluntary Minnesota Student survey will be given to grades 5, 8, 9 and 11. It deals with issues that school age students deal with. McGuire reported that a site visit was conducted by the MDE and the results may take a month or two to get back. Conferences were well attended at the Winnebago and Blue Earth sites. Kindergarten Round-up will be held April 5th in Blue Earth and April 13th at the Winnebago site. Also the Science Fairs were held at both sites with many good projects that will go on the regional Fair in Mankato on April 27TH. Schneider reported that a guest Choir Director from Wartburg College will be here on April 19th to work with the vocal students of BEA and present a concert that night in the performing arts center. There will be a DLT meeting on March 13th. A group of people from the District took part in a tour of the Red Wing High School to see how they implanted the moving of the 8th grade to their High School building. They were very gracious hosts and answered many questions that the group had. This group will continue to evaluate what is best for our kids and see if it would work to move the 8th grade students to the High School.
Other Reports:
Ryan Hoffman was present to give an update on the current HVAC project that is ongoing at the k-site. He is very happy with the way the contractors have come together and are moving this project forward quicker than expected. He is also very glad to report that at this time the contingency fund has been used very little at this stage of the process. He stated that this unusual on a remodel project of this size. He also gave an extra thank you to Al Gieser, his staff and the entire group of employees within the District for their willingness to be accommodating and help however asked to keep this project moving forward as well as it has.
Action Items:
On a Hanson/Cahill motion the Board approved the Health & Safety Policy for 2013.
The Board passed an “acceptable use & safety policy” in regards to School Internet usage on a Haugh/Eckhardt motion.
The School calendar for 2013-2014 was passed unanimously on a Maher/Cahill motion.
The Non-Certified Seniority list was passed on a Haugh/Hanson motion.
The Spring Coaching contracts were approved unanimously on a Fellows/Eckhardt motion.

If more than five comments in opposition to the application are received during the comment period, or the EMSRB denies the application, the applicant may immediately request a contested case hearing, or may try to resolve the objections of the public and/or the EMSRB within 30 days, pursuant to Minnesota Statues 144E.11, subdivision 5(a), (b). Notice is hereby given that the Faribault County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on May 28, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the Faribault County Courthouse Boardroom, 415 North Main, Blue Earth, MN. The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comments in regards to the request of Stateline Coop for the construction of a grain marketing facility in Jo Daviess Township. The Board will consider an abatement of the county’s share of taxes estimated at Twenty- thousand dollars per year for approximately ten years.
