School Board MINUTES

February 10, 2020

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Blue Earth Area, I.S.D. #2860 was held on Monday, February 10, 2020, in Blue Earth, MN.

Present were School Board members: S. Benz, S. Beyer, F. Bly, J. Eckles, S. Hauskins, S. Rosenau, and K. Zierke.

Also attending were Supt. Fletcher, principals, members of the press, staff and public.

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson Benz. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The Board approved the agenda on a Beyer/Zierke motion. 7-0 vote.

Public Input: None

On an Eckles/Bly motion, the January minutes were approved. 7-0 vote.

The Board approved payments of bills and wire transfers of $1,151,996.62 on a Bly/ Hauskins motion. 7-0 vote.

District Report:

A. Holly Christian -Businesses Professionals of America (BPA). Students compete in problem solving as individuals and teams in business settings. Two students who competed shared their experience and how this helps prepare them for their future aspirations. There has been an increase in students from 20 last year to 39 this year.

Chairperson’s Report:

Chairperson Benz shared mid-year goals/evaluation of Supt. Fletcher.

Superintendent’s Report: Superintendent Fletcher reported on the following items:

A. School Board Recognition – Week of Feb. 17

B. MSBA Leadership Conference

C. Enrollment Update-K-12 is currently 1022 which is down from October when it was 1026 but increased from 1004 in 2019.

D. 2020-2021 Calendar.

E. Conference call with MDE Commissioner Focusing on MN State results showing increase needs in mental health

Committee Reports:

DLT Meeting Highlights were as follows:

Strategic Planning sub committee discussed the new High School lunch program process.

Professional Development sub committee working on PD ideas for the end of the year and pre-service days.

Communications sub committee discussed the folder created for the district staff logo, staff recognition and new name for the free and reduced lunch forms.

Principal Reports:

Principal Dressler and Assistant Principal Shaffer reported on K-7 recent activities, programs, and data meetings on how to help teachers help students.

Principal Ewing reported on 8-12 recent happenings, including REV, ACT Standards, One Act Play and Winter Formal.

Low bid was not awarded due to lack of ag tile experience, reference of work not related to the project, and difficult nature of the project.

8. Accepted low bid for bid package #3 on CD 21 improvement tile defect repairs of $163,487.50 from Brunz Construction. Other bids received were: GRS Enterprises Inc. of $243,111.00 and Noomen Excavating LLC of $187,734.12.

9. Accepted recommended bid for bid package #5 on CD 21 improvement tile defect repairs of $69,400.00 from Brunz Construction. Other bids received were: GRS Enterprises Inc. of $49,885.00 and Noomen Excavating LLC of $78,583.96. Low bid was not awarded due to lack of ag tile experience, reference of work not related to the project, and difficult nature of the project.

10. Accepted low bid of $44,814.00 from Krueger Excavating of Albert Lea for tree removal on CD 55 in Brush Creek and Emerald Townships. One other bid was received from Albert Lea Tree Service of $132,405.00.

11. Approved payment of bills totaling $424,105.31.
